This is where I will be placing information on national programs for those who need help.
I will also place information on each states version of Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services, which is where we go for our main benefits, as I have time.
Keep checking back!

Freecycle, Craigslist & Angel Food Ministries
Freeycle. This is a yahoo group. They have locations through out the country. Sign up for some close to you. Here people give away things that are too good to throw away and that they don’t need any more in order to keep from taking them to the landfill. You can find household items, furniture, clothing, books even homeschool supplies and materials. In some you can also do a wanted for something you may need.
Craigslist has places through the country, but they have mostly things for sale that are cheaper sometimes than in the stores.
www.angelfoodministries.org. They offer a box of food each month for $25, and they even take food stamps. This food would retail at about $50 in stores and consists of fresh and frozen foods. There is supposed to be enough to feed a family of 4 for one week or a senior for a month, You can buy more than on box if you want. They also have extra items available like boxes of chicken or steaks. It’s hosted by local churches but the churches only get about $1 of the cost. Their youth and adults help distribute the food boxes each month and it works well at the one we use.

I just checked the website, and there are a lot of host sites for Angel Food Ministries in your area. Go here http://www.angelfoodministries.com/hosts.asp and enter your information.
You may also want to consider http://www.fns.usda.gov/fdd/programs/csfp/csfp_eligibility.htm. In the facts, it tells you where to contact in your state. Ask where the closest pick-up place is.
Here in Maine we have a couple of other options as well. Food cupboards: Some at churches. Some not. Very helpful.
We can also go to our town hall and get help. This is not welfare, and if we can’t afford to pay back it is okay. Each time you go for help you must bring bills and receipts for everything for a one month period. Call and see what they require in your area.
And, specifically for the working poor http://www.western-eagle.org/food-box.htm.
And http://www.cafoodbanks.org/
I sure hope that this has been helpful to you. Please, let me know if any particular program works out for you so that I can add it here to help others.
