Returnables

Posted by Shannon Buck on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

I was curious as to how many of you pick up returnables when you notice them when you are out and about.

If so, what do you use the funds for?

Maines’ Post Secondary Education Tuition Waiver

Posted by Shannon Buck on Saturday, February 21, 2009

The website for The Department of Health and Human Services in Maine has this to say about the Post Secondary Education Tuition Waiver:

“If you are in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services at the time that you graduate from high school or get your General Equivalency Diploma (GED), you are eligible for a “tuition waiver” if you are planning to attend one of the University of Maine system colleges, one of the state’s Vocational Technical colleges, or Maine Maritime Academy. If you meet the requirements that are described below, you may attend one of the schools covered by the tuition waiver, tuition free, until you complete your college undergraduate degree.”

and

“The Department of Health and Human Services will continue to provide post-secondary education financial assistance for those students who are not attending one of the colleges covered by the tuition waiver provided you meet the conditions described above. “

This looks like a worthy way to cut costs for a college student. I’m not sure if it is just for children in foster care or not.

Shannon

P.S. If you have any experience with this waiver, and would care to share that experience with us, please post it to the comments section.

Also, if you know of any other state run programs, please post those as well.

Thank you.

Financial Aid for Students: Part 3

Posted by Shannon Buck on Thursday, February 19, 2009

In Financial Aid for Students: Part 1, I discussed the Pell Grant and FAFSA. Then, in Financial Aid for Students: Part 2, I discussed the Financial Aid Wizard and the Scholarship Matching Wizard. In part 3, I will be listing specific financial aid opportunities for your soon to be college student.

Zowie and I are looking into each of these further, to see if they will be useful to us. I want her to have the best education possible. It is her desire to become an adolescent psychologist, which is a ten year college term. This will be very expensive. She understands that she will be working through college, and that I will help as much as I can.

Shannon

P.S. If you know of other scholarships, please let us know in the comments section. Thank you.

Financial Aid for Students: Part 2

Posted by Shannon Buck on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

In Financial Aid for the Student: Part 1, I told you about the PELL Grant and FAFSA. In part 2, I will be discussing the Financial Aid Wizard and the Scolarship Matching Wizard.

The Financial Aid Wizardlooks like it will be a huge help for any high school student who is trying to estimate college costs. They can also figure out their Expected Family Contribution, and do other helpful things.

The Scholarship Matching Wizardwill allow you to “perform a comprehensive search for scholarships based on personal information. This will really help Zowie out in planning for college in many ways, including the ability to apply for colleges on-line.

In part 3 of Financial Aid for Students,  I will be listing specific financial aid opportunities for you to look into.

P.S. If you know of any other tools that would be useful for college planning or entrance, please let us know in the comments section. Thank you.

Financial Aid for Students : Part 1

Posted by Shannon Buck on Sunday, February 15, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I am dreading my daughters’ college years simply because I don’t think I can afford it. As a matter-of-fact, I know that I can’t.

That is why we are looking into grants and scholarships at this time. She is a Junior this year, so it is time that we start.

Zowie will be eligible for a PELL Grant.  This is a federally funded program for low-income individuals. I  believe that grants do not have to be repaid, which will be very helpful.

We will be sure to fill out a FAFSA. This is a big step for any high school student who wants to attend college. I advise you to check out their website, as it will be very useful. You can apply on-line for student financial aid. For more information, visit this site.

These will be our first two steps an preparing Zowie for college entrance. I will be making two more posts soon with more information on financial aid.

Shannon

P.S. If you have any ideas for financial aid, please let us know in the comments section. Thank you.

The Government May Owe You Money

Posted by Shannon Buck on Saturday, February 7, 2009

Yes, you read that correctly. There is a chance that the government may be holding money that rightfully belongs to you.

I visited the site recently, and was shocked to see that I had a claim available to me. It isn’t a large amount of money, but it is mine. It is between $25.00 and $100.00, so I claimed it. I can use every little bit of money that I can get my hands on right now.

How can you find out if the government owes you money? See their website, USA.gov.

Good Luck!

Shannon
